Slouchy Beret

Yes, the gray alpaca/silk had been transformed into a slouchy beret!

The same fate was intended for the maroon merino, sadly the man at the yarn store told me to use much bulkier yarn than I should have. The hat is huge! Even after I felted it, it needs a larger head than mine to cover.

  2. The beret is beautiful!! You may still be able to use your merino yarn to make a smaller beret, w/o changing the pattern or number of stitches, as merino wool has a much greater shrinkage factor when felted than does alpaca. Silk shrinks a little when wet but does not felt at all on its own but is carried along in a blend by the other fiber's felting characteristics. Also the fact that the merino appears to be a fairly bulky single ply w/ a somewhat loose twist will also influence its degree of shrinkage. To really know how much it will shrink you must knit a sample, measure it, felt it as much as you intend to felt the beret, and then measure it again. Boring to do, but true. Good luck!
